Year 1

Welcome to 1BS and 1SS. In Year 1 there are lots of people who help you with your learning - Mr Smith in 1BS, Miss Sivolathanathan in 1SS, Mrs Bastin and Mrs Quinland. There are other people who will be working with you too – Mr Simmonds, Mrs Sells and Mrs Simmonds.

Curriculum

Our curriculum topic in Summer 1 is "Ahhhh Pirates!” We will be looking at a variety of books set in the world of exploration.   During this topic the children will be looking at a range of core texts written by authors such as Cressida Cowell. Our Science topic is extremely exciting.  The children are going to be "Working Scientifically.”  Each week the children will undertake an experiment.  They will have the chance to observe, predict and record and hopefully gain a real love for Science and have some ‘awe and wonder’ moments.

Our curriculum topic in Summer 2 is "Rainforests.” We will be looking in detail at Poetry and creating some non-fiction writing booklets all about Rainforests.  During this topic we will look into the future of the Rainforest, global warming and how important Rainforests are in the world.  Our Science topic is "Animals" and we will be looking at how to identify different animal body parts and how to classify them.

Things to know

Things to Know

PE will be on a Monday and Wednesday for 1BS (Mr Smith) and 1SS (Miss Sivolathanathan). Children will need a PE kit for those days that can be left in class over the half term.  The kit should include a white t-shirt, black shorts/leggings/tracksuit bottoms, a black tracksuit top, white socks and black trainers. Please make sure all of the kit is clearly labelled with your child's name.

Library is on a Wednesday and children return their book on Tuesday, the day before.

Homework is given out on Friday (on the website) and to be returned by the following Friday.

Please bring your book bag (with books and diary) every day. Your teacher will read with you and you will have a weekly book changing day which is Tuesday.  Parents, please use the diary to tell us how your child reads at home, words they struggled with and how you feel about the level and challenge of the book.
