Welcome to Year 1

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to 1CH and 1SS. In Year 1 there are lots of people who help you with your learning – Miss Heard, Miss Sivolathanathan, Miss Drew, Mrs Mehta, Mrs Smith and Mrs Knight. There are other people who will be working with you too – Mr Simmonds and Mrs Baynes.

Our curriculum topic in Autumn 1 is "Our local area” This topic will encourage the children to explore the local environment and look at journeys we make. During this topic the children will be looking at a range of core texts around this theme. These include The Journey, Where’s My Teddy? And The Huey’s in the new jumper. Our Science topic is "Ourselves" and is linked closely to the topic theme.

Our curriculum topic in Autumn 2 is "Traditional tales” This topic will encourage the children to explore the different stories and alternative versions of the stories. During this topic the children will be creating story boxes and looking at sculpture to make characters from the story.

Phonics plays an important part in the Year 1 curriculum.  The children will continue to have daily phonics sessions to support their reading and writing.

Please find our curriculum newsletter attached.

Things to know

Things to Know

PE will be on a Tuesday in year 1. Children will need a PE kit for those days that can be left in class over the half term.  The kit should include a white t-shirt, black shorts/leggings/tracksuit bottoms, a black tracksuit top, white socks and black trainers or plimsolls. Please make sure all of the kit is clearly labelled with your child's name.

Library is on a Thursday and children return their book on Wednesday, the day before.

Homework is given out on Friday (on the website) and to be returned by the following Friday. This will start gradually to ensure a smooth transition.

Please bring your book bag (with books and diary) every day. Your teacher will read with you and you will have a weekly book changing day as specified in their reading diary. A bookmark will be given to your child with words to learn, once they know all these words at random a new bookmark will be issued. When your child can read all these words we encourage them to learn how to spell them.

Parents, please use the diary to tell us how your child reads at home, words they struggled with and how you feel about the level and challenge of the book.
