Welcome to Year 1

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to 1CH and 1SS. In Year 1 there are lots of people who help you with your learning – Miss Heard, Miss Nathan, Miss Drew, Mrs Mehta, Mrs Smith and Mrs Knight. There are other people who will be working with you too – Mr Simmonds and Mrs Baynes.

Our curriculum topic in spring 1st is “People who Help Us”. This will be taught cross-curricular, we will be learning about different nurses in History including Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole. We will be thinking about how they help us, what they use to help us and ways they travel. We will be looking at emergency service vehicles and we will be making our own vehicles using junior hacksaws, wood and other DT equipment. Our Science topic is “Polar Adventures”. During this topic we will be learning about different classifications of animals – including mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects. We will discuss what the differences are between carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. We will also be learning about polar animals and creating a polar animal booklet.

Our curriculum topic in Spring 2nd is "Inventors”. This topic will encourage the children to explore different figures in history who have invented things. Phonics plays an important part in the Year 1 curriculum.  The children will continue to have daily phonics sessions to support their reading and writing.

Please find our curriculum newsletter attached.

Things to know

PE will be on a Monday in year 1. Children will need a PE kit for those days that can be left in class over the half term.  The kit should include a white t-shirt, black shorts/leggings/tracksuit bottoms, a black tracksuit top, white socks and black trainers or plimsolls. Please make sure all of the kit is clearly labelled with your child's name.

Library is on a Thursday and children return their book on Wednesday, the day before.

Homework is given out on Friday (on the website) and to be returned by the following Friday. This will start gradually to ensure a smooth transition.

Please bring your book bag (with books and diary) every day. Your teacher will read with you and you will have a weekly book changing day which is Tuesday.  Parents, please use the diary to tell us how your child reads at home, words they struggled with and how you feel about the level and challenge of the book.
