Welcome to Year 1

Year 1

Welcome to Year 1

Welcome to 1CH and 1SS. The Reception team consists of Miss Heard, Miss Nathan, Mrs Mehta, Mrs Smith and Mrs Rama. This means there are lots of adults available to help you settle in and begin your child’s school learning journey. We are also very lucky as we have Mrs Baynes and Mr Simmonds also working with us at different times during the week.

Our curriculum topic in Summer 1 is "Kings and Queens”. During this topic we will be looking at different Kings and Queens from the past, including King Arthur and Queen Elizabeth I. We will be using atlases and maps to locate different countries that particular Kings and Queens lived in, as well as painting and drawing portraits using a range of media.

Our Science topic is extremely exciting, and involves visiting our school forest to find and identify minibeasts as well as growing flowers/plants for the new flower beds in the school grounds.

Our curriculum topic in Summer 2 is "Rainforests.”  During this topic we will look into the future of the Rainforest, global warming and how important Rainforests are in the world. We will also be looking at different paintings by famous artists including Henri Rousseau’s Tiger in a Tropical Storm.

Our Science topic is "Animals" and we will be looking at how to identify different animal body parts and how to classify them.

Things to know

PE will be on a Monday in year 1. Children will need a PE kit for those days that can be left in class over the half term.  The kit should include a white t-shirt, black shorts/leggings/tracksuit bottoms, a black tracksuit top, white socks and black trainers or plimsolls. Please make sure all of the kit is clearly labelled with your child's name.

Library is on a Thursday and children return their book on Wednesday, the day before.

Homework is given out on Friday (on the website) and to be returned by the following Friday. This will start gradually to ensure a smooth transition.

Please bring your book bag (with books and diary) every day. Your teacher will read with you and you will have a weekly book changing day which is Tuesday.  Parents, please use the diary to tell us how your child reads at home, words they struggled with and how you feel about the level and challenge of the book.
